All Houston airports, including George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH), William P. Hobby Airport (HOU), and Ellington Airport (EFD), will suspend operations starting at 12 a.m. Tuesday due to an arctic front expected to bring severe winter weather.

The announcement, made by the Houston Airport System, comes as the region braces for wintry precipitation and icy conditions.

Temporary Closure Details

In a press release, airport officials stated that there would be no departing or arriving flights during the closure. While no reopening timeline has been set, the airport system confirmed that teams would remain on-site around the clock to monitor weather conditions and prepare for a safe resumption of operations.

“Our dedicated teams are working diligently to prepare for a swift and safe return to normal operations when weather permits,” the statement read. Snowplows and other heavy equipment will be deployed to clear airfields and ensure safe conditions for flights.

Traveler Advisory

Travelers are urged not to attempt driving to the airports on Tuesday. Anyone with flights scheduled through Houston should check directly with their airlines for updates on ticket changes, cancellations, or rescheduling.

United Airlines, the largest carrier at George Bush Intercontinental, has implemented travel waivers for customers affected by the closures. “We’re working with our customers who are impacted by the planned airport closures in Houston and have waivers in place for cities preparing for winter weather,” the airline said. Travelers can visit united.com to check flight statuses and access tools like Agent on Demand for assistance via text, FaceTime, or phone.

For tickets booked to or from affected cities in the Southeast on or before January 15, United Airlines is waiving change fees and fare differences for rescheduling.

Southwest Airlines, which operates extensively at Hobby Airport, is also offering travel waivers. Passengers unable to use their tickets may qualify for refunds. Customers are encouraged to visit Southwest.com or contact customer service for specific guidance.

Regional and National Impacts

The arctic front’s impact extends beyond Houston, with travel disruptions expected across the Southeast. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued winter storm warnings for several states, urging residents to prepare for icy roads and subfreezing temperatures.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) advises travelers to monitor their flight statuses and stay updated on national air traffic through its FAA Flight Delay Information website.

Safety Measures and Next Steps

The Houston Airport System emphasized its commitment to passenger safety, with officials closely monitoring the situation to determine when conditions will allow operations to resume. Updates will be provided through the official Fly2Houston.com website and social media channels.

Travelers are encouraged to stay informed and plan for potential delays or cancellations. Both airlines and airport officials stress the importance of safety and preparedness during the severe weather event.
